My Hot Tub Is Too Hot

There Are Ways That You Can Lower The Temperature Of Your Tub When It Gets Too Hot

With summertime in full swing, it’s no doubt that a lot of us are in a major heat wave. And I mean MAJOR!! The temperature in my city has been averaging about 105 degrees for the better part of two months. In fact, we get a lot of calls from people thinking that their tub is overheating, when in fact it is what we refer to as HEAT CREEP.

With that being said, the only thing keeping my family cool this summer has been our hot tub which we’ve been using as a COOL tub. That’s right! A COOL tub. We’ve been able to get our tub down to 80-85 degrees overnight.  And our tub has absolutely no shade over it.  No trees, no awning, nada!  Sometimes I get in with my children on a hot, hot day and the water is almost too chilly. In this blog post, I’m going to give you tips on how to cool off your tub in a hurry.

TIPS TO LOWER THE TEMPERATURE OF YOUR HOT TUB

TIP #1  VENT IT AT NIGHT!

  • Now there’s 2 ways that you can ventilate your tub at night.  First, you can simply open up the cover, either full or partial.  This is by far the easiest, most-effective, and least expensive way to cool off your tub in a hurry.  As long as the air temperature is lower than the water temperature, it will cool off.  Cover it back up when the air temperature rises above the water temp.

  • Second, you can use an ordinary beach ball or rubber ball and stick it up under the cover overnight.  One ball will work, but one on either side will give better ventilation.  Any ball will work;  I’ve used old soccer balls, kid’s bouncy balls, and even beach balls.  Keep in mind that the bigger the ball, the more  air will cool the water.  I’m providing a couple of links for some inexpensive balls that will do the trick!

You will be amazed by how much a simple ventilation will bring down the temperature of your tub!

***Very important note.  Never leave a hot tub cover open if it is accessible to small children and/or pets.

*** You might be concerned about leaves, bugs, and debris getting into your tub if you leave it open overnight.  You can use a simple net with a handle to get out any minor debris.  Check out this link!

***If you want to leave your tub open overnight, and it happens to sit under trees, you probably won’t want to mess with having to net it constantly every morning.  They make a net covering for hot tub/pools.  It’s lightweight and keep bugs and leaves out of the tub while you ventilate it.  Here’s the link!

They come in different sizes, and big enough to cover your entire tub and cover-lifter if you have one.

A quick net job will easily take care of any leaves that fall into the tub if you leave it open to ventilate.

You can vent your tub using ordinary bouncy balls.  Place one on both sides for maximum ventilation.

The temperature outside is 104 degrees.  We got our tub down to 82 degrees last night.  It IS possible!

TIP #2  USE AN UMBRELLA

I know what you’re thinking…a no brainer.  An umbrella will actually serve two purposes.  It will keep the hot sun from heating up the tub, and block the bright sun while you’re actually using the tub.  I think the reason I included this on my list is because I’m actually considering getting one myself for the blocking the sun purpose, while also shading us when we’re in the tub.  They make all kinds of makes and models, and I’ve been pretty impressed by some of the ones we’ve seen from customers.

Here’s a couple of links for some good looking-umbrellas.

I’ve also seen sun canopies hung over hot tubs and patios.  My parents have one and it gives an enormous amount of shade.  I think that this would be a great option for keeping your tub water cooler.  Here’s a link for a high-rated canopy!

There’s so many to choose from, that you should have no problem finding one that will fit your preference and budget.

TIP #3  PUT YOUR HOT TUB IN SLEEP MODE OR SUMMER MODE!

Some tubs have summer modes, and some have sleep modes.  Putting your tub in one of these modes will ensure that the heater does not turn on at all.  If you are unable or unsure how to work the modes, you should be able to find how to change them in your owner’s manual.  Remember to keep your manual somewhere safe;  you’ll never know when you’ll need it!

If you are not familiar with how to use the modes, you can simply set the temperature as low as it will go.  Keep in mind that different hot tubs will have different lows.  Some tubs will only go down to 80 degrees, while some tubs will go down as far as 59 degrees.  In the latter case, you would not even need to put the hot tub in sleep mode.

TIP #4  TURN THE FILTRATION TO THE LOWEST SETTING!

The more the pumps turn on, the more heat they will give off.  You will want to turn your filtration cycle to the lowest setting.  Again, this is something you should be able to find in your owner’s manual.   Of course I would not recommend turning the filtration cycle down if you are having a bunch of people in your tub because the pumps would need to move the water to keep it at an optimal level.

By using these helpful hints, you should be able to bring the temperature of your hot tub down with no issues.  It’s been a hot summer, so best of luck to all of you to stay cool.  From our family to yours, HAPPY HOT TUBBING!!
